Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to unite in promoting and preserving peace across the country as Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Peace.
Mrs Tinubu made the appeal in a message to mark the day, themed “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” highlighting the responsibility of individuals and communities in fostering lasting peace.
She said sustainable peace could only be achieved through the active commitment and participation of all citizens, noting that it should start from the home and extend to schools, workplaces and communities.
According to her, tolerance, patience, justice, mutual respect and dialogue are essential to strengthening peace in society.

She therefore encouraged Nigerians to uphold these values and contribute collectively to maintaining peace across the country.
The First Lady also called on citizens to reject actions and attitudes that could create division, urging them to live harmoniously with one another.
“I encourage all Nigerians to reject division and embrace the values that unite us as one people. Let us invest in peace through our words, choices, and actions every day. Happy International Day of Peace 2026,” she said.
The International Day of Peace is commemorated annually on September 21. The United Nations General Assembly established the observance in 1981 and, in 2001, designated the day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.
