The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans for a nationwide engagement starting Tuesday, 7 April, following the Federal Government’s review of the Professional Allowance Table and ongoing constructive dialogue.
The Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, said in a statement on Saturday that the decision reflects extensive consultations among members across the country and underscores a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and collaboration.
Dr Ibrahim explained that the resolution was reached during an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting conducted virtually, where participants emphasised the need for continued engagement with government to achieve outcomes beneficial to both doctors and patients.
According to the association, the action will commence at 12 a.m. on Tuesday and will involve members in federal, state, and private institutions, while maintaining a readiness to continue dialogue for timely resolution.
NARD stressed that reinstating the Professional Allowance Table is crucial to improving welfare, boosting morale, and retaining skilled medical professionals nationwide. The association also called for the prompt payment of promotion and salary arrears owed to resident doctors.
The Secretary-General highlighted the importance of releasing the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, noting that adequate funding would enhance training opportunities, professional development, and overall capacity within Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
“NARD remains committed to dialogue and collaborative efforts to address outstanding allowances, strengthen working conditions, and ensure fairness for all members,” Dr Ibrahim said.
He added that the Professional Allowance Table is intended to standardise doctors’ remuneration, ensuring consistency and supporting improved administration across the national healthcare system.
Observers have noted that discussions between NARD and the Federal Government continue to present opportunities for resolving welfare concerns, enhancing cooperation, and ensuring uninterrupted delivery of quality healthcare services nationwide.
