The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has honoured leading filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele for her sustained commercial achievements, following an extraordinary run at the Nigerian box office that peaked in 2026.

The recognition, presented in Lagos, highlights a four-year period during which Akindele consistently delivered record-setting productions that reshaped commercial cinema performance in Nollywood.
Record-Breaking Box Office Run
Among the productions cited were Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020), Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024/2025), and her latest release, Behind The Scenes (2026), which generated an unprecedented ₦2.7 billion in revenue.
Describing the recognition as significant for the broader industry, NFVCB Executive Director, Dr Shaibu Husseini, said the honour underscores the value of quality cinema distribution and exhibition.
“This is a statement that excellence in cinema exhibition matters,” Husseini said.
National Recognition and Industry Applause
Tributes also came from key figures in the creative sector. In a recorded message, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Creative Economy and Tourism, Hannatu Musa Musawa, described Akindele as a “phenomenon” whose work continues to raise international standards for Nollywood productions.
Chairperson of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), Chioma Ude, alongside the General Manager of the National Theatre, Mrs Akerele, commended the filmmaker’s creativity, resilience, and ability to combine cultural authenticity with remarkable commercial success.
Strategy, Creativity and Teamwork
In her acceptance remarks, Akindele attributed her achievements to careful planning, teamwork, and a strong understanding of her audience. She also addressed the widely discussed dance-themed promotional campaign for Behind The Scenes, explaining that it was a deliberate and innovative marketing decision.
“It was a creative and cost-effective marketing strategy rooted in originality,” Akindele explained.
She concluded by encouraging greater unity within the industry.
“Nollywood is big enough for everyone. Consistency and professionalism will always be recognized,” she said.
The recognition further cements Akindele’s standing as one of Nollywood’s most commercially successful filmmakers, while signalling growing institutional support for excellence in Nigeria’s evolving film industry.
