Kosoko Museum Seeks U.S. Collaboration to Promote Lagos Heritage

The Kosoko family has called for collaboration with the United States Consulate in Lagos towards the preservation and development of the King Kosoko Memorial Museum at Ereko, Lagos State.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Oloja of Lagos, Prince Abiola Kosoko, and issued to journalists on Monday.

The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the U.S. Consul General, Rick Swart, to the museum on 17 August.

Kosoko, who also serves as the museum’s curator, noted that the cultural landmark houses relics of the 19th-century Lagos traditional ruler, Oba Morounfolu, popularly known as King Kosoko.

He added that the site features the 163-year-old palace, which accommodates both a main and a mini museum, showcasing the late monarch’s royal regalia alongside his correspondences with Europeans.

Among the antiques on display are letters exchanged between the Kosoko family and foreign dignitaries, including Portuguese and British partners as well as a former American president.

Kosoko urged the collaboration of the U.S. Mission in safeguarding the artefacts and promoting the museum as a centre for cultural tourism.

Swart, who assumed office in July, commended the family for hosting him at the historic site.

“It is such a wonderful place with so much history,” he remarked.

The diplomat also conveyed his best wishes to the family matriarch, Alhaja Mutiat Alli-Balogun, on the occasion of her 96th birthday.
