2025 UTME: House to Investigate Technical Errors Behind Mass Failure

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the technical fault that led to the widespread failure in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance, sponsored by Adewale Adebayo from Osun State.

Data revealed that over 78 per cent of candidates scored below 200 points out of a possible 400.

However, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducted an early review and identified a significant technical error.

JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed at a press conference in Abuja that the results of 379,997 candidates were affected.

He explained that discrepancies arose due to faulty server updates in the Lagos and South-East zones, which prevented candidates’ responses from being uploaded during the first three days of the examination.

Oloyede added that the problem, caused by one of the two technical service providers for the exercise, went unnoticed prior to the release of the results.

Candidates affected by the issue will be given the opportunity to retake the examination between 16 and 19 May 2025.

In presenting the motion during plenary in Abuja, Adebayo highlighted that many Nigerians incurred losses travelling long distances to their UTME centres.

Contributing to the motion, Sada Soli, a lawmaker from Katsina, urged the House to commend the JAMB Registrar for acknowledging the technical fault and issuing an apology to Nigerians.

He praised Oloyede for demonstrating integrity and increasing the Board’s revenue since his appointment.

However, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, stated that it would be up to the investigating committee to decide whether to commend the Registrar.

The motion was unanimously adopted following a voice vote conducted by Abbas.

Furthermore, the House called on the federal government to establish Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres in every Local Government Area across the country.

Recall that JAMB released the results of the 2025 UTME candidates on 9 May, which showed a high failure rate.
