The United Kingdom has praised the economic and trade initiatives introduced by President Bola Tinubu, calling them bold, courageous, and positive.
This commendation was made by British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, during a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House in Abuja on Monday.
According to Montgomery, the UK government sees significant potential in Nigeria’s economy, particularly in the new opportunities being created through the challenging but necessary reforms led by President Tinubu.
Renewed Hope
The British High Commissioner expressed admiration for the Nigerian First Lady’s pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), highlighting its positive impact in empowering women, particularly in the areas of education, health, and humanitarian efforts.
He noted that these reforms have strengthened the trade relationship between the two countries.
Montgomery also emphasised the UK government’s attention to the ongoing constitutional amendments, particularly the push for special seats for women in Nigeria’s National Assembly.
In response, Nigeria’s First Lady assured her guests that both the government and the Renewed Hope Initiative, aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, would continue working to address the challenges faced by Nigerians.
“I believe we can support each other if we genuinely show concern,” she stated.
She further explained that the RHI also focuses on empowering women in the informal sector, who are directly impacted by its efforts.
Mrs. Tinubu acknowledged that the number of women in the National Assembly is decreasing, and expressed her commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at improving their representation.
She added that Nigerian women need to be informed about the right individuals to represent them, and emphasized the importance of educating women to ensure effective participation in governance.
