A British regional police commissioner has called for an urgent review of a decision barring Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending their UEFA Conference League match against Aston Villa in Birmingham next month.
The restriction was imposed by a local safety advisory group based on guidance from the West Midlands Police, citing security concerns.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised the move, describing it as “the wrong decision,” and urged that it be reconsidered.
Simon Foster, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, said in a statement on Friday that he had requested an immediate review of the ban. While Foster oversees the force’s performance and accountability, he does not hold operational authority over such decisions.
The match is scheduled to take place at Villa Park in November.
