Trump arrived in Britain for his historic second state visit on Wednesday, greeted by King Charles as the trip began with unmatched pomp, sweeping security measures, fresh investment announcements and expected protests.
The U.S. president and his wife Melania were welcomed at Windsor Castle, the thousand-year-old royal residence, where a red-carpet reception included a carriage procession, gun salutes, a military flypast and a lavish state banquet. Britain has billed the welcome as the largest ceremonial greeting for a visiting leader in living memory, underscoring the significance of the occasion both diplomatically and symbolically.
Trump, an open admirer of the monarchy, expressed delight at his return, telling reporters: “I love Britain. It’s a very special place.” He is the first U.S. leader and the first elected politician to be invited by a British monarch for two state visits.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is banking on the royal spectacle to reinforce Britain’s “special relationship” with Washington, while also pressing for closer economic ties and cooperation on global issues. His agenda includes securing billions in U.S. investment, advancing tariff talks and addressing Ukraine and Israel with Trump.
The visit has already yielded a major technology pact, with Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and OpenAI pledging ÂŁ31 billion ($42 billion) in British investments over the coming years, spanning artificial intelligence, quantum computing and civil nuclear energy.
“Basically, I’m there also on trade,” Trump said before leaving Washington. “They want to see if they can refine the trade deal a little bit … so we’ll talk to them.” But the political stakes are high. Trump remains deeply unpopular in Britain, and Starmer, grappling with economic troubles and plummeting poll ratings, must demonstrate that his gamble on royal diplomacy delivers tangible results.

Security for the visit has been extraordinary, with a massive police operation deployed in Windsor. Yet protesters managed a high-profile stunt on Tuesday night, projecting images of Trump with Epstein onto one of Windsor Castle’s towers. Police said four people were arrested for malicious communications. Further demonstrations are expected in London, where 1,600 police officers have been mobilised to manage a rally by the “Stop the Trump Coalition.” Public opinion remains divided, with some commuters calling the invitation a political mistake, while others view it as a pragmatic use of Britain’s soft power.
Wednesday’s events centred on pageantry. Trump and Melania were greeted by Prince William and his wife Kate before joining King Charles and Queen Camilla for a carriage procession through the castle grounds, lined by 1,300 British service personnel. The couple were also shown items from the Royal Collection linked to U.S. history and paid respects at St George’s Chapel, where Trump laid a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II, who hosted him for his first state visit in 2019.
A military flypast capped the day’s ceremonies before the state banquet. For King Charles, the occasion carries both opportunity and ambivalence. Though he shares little common ground with Trump from his environmental advocacy to his religious and diplomatic priorities the event gives him his greatest moment on the global stage since his coronation. “If it goes well … this will go down as the most consequential event in his reign,” said historian Anthony Seldon.
