U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that his administration will implement a “permanent pause” on migration from countries he described as “Third World Countries,” citing the need for the U.S. immigration system to recover and stabilise.
In a statement recorded by Reuters, Trump said the pause is aimed at restoring what he called stability in immigration flows, though he provided few details on which countries would be affected or how the policy would be enforced.
The move follows a series of restrictive immigration measures under Trump’s administration, including sharp reductions in refugee admission caps and extensive reviews of asylum and immigration applications from certain countries.

The policy is expected to spark domestic and international debate, particularly among immigrant communities and governments whose citizens may be impacted. Human rights groups have warned that such sweeping restrictions could lead to increased exclusion, family separations, and potential violations of asylum obligations.
