The Tony Awards, officially known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, remain one of the most prestigious accolades in American performing arts. Since 1947, the awards have honoured outstanding achievements in live Broadway theatre, celebrating excellence across plays, musicals, acting, direction, design, and production. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, with the annual ceremony traditionally held in June in New York City, the heart of Broadway.
For the 78th Tony Awards, the nominee list was unveiled on Thursday, with three musicals—“Death Becomes Her”, “Maybe Happy Ending”, and “Buena Vista Social Club”—leading the pack with 10 nominations apiece.
The announcement was made by previous Tony winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce, building excitement ahead of Broadway’s biggest night. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the celebrated star of Wicked, and will take place on June 8 at 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
