President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to intensified collaboration with Chad in the fight against terrorism and banditry in the Lake Chad region. The President said the partnership is crucial to enhancing regional security and ensuring stability across shared borders.
The pledge was made on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, during a meeting with Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno. The high-level discussions focused on cross-border security, coordinated responses to emerging threats, and the broader challenge of maintaining peace in the sub-region.

Describing the visit as timely, President Tinubu said, “Chad remains a vital partner in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), and our nations must work together to eliminate violent threats and safeguard our citizens.”
He added that both countries had agreed to intensify joint operations to combat terrorism, strengthen border security, and preserve the sovereignty and stability of their nations.
Highlighting the shared responsibility of neighbouring states, the Nigerian leader noted that lasting peace in the Lake Chad region depends on continuous collaboration among all affected countries. He also acknowledged the historic ties between Nigeria and Chad, stressing that current efforts build on the foundation laid by previous administrations.
“We have come a long way. What we inherited from our forebears is the responsibility to ensure peace and stability for the development of our region,” he stated.
President Tinubu further noted that improved security would facilitate trade, economic cooperation, and social integration across borders, with geographical and linguistic differences seen as opportunities rather than obstacles.
The discussions also touched on wider regional engagement, including collaboration with countries such as Niger, to create a united front against terrorism and promote shared prosperity.
“It is a joy and honour to welcome my brother to Abuja and to reassure our people that we will continue to work together to combat terrorism and secure a better future for our region,” Tinubu added.
