Super Eagles Thrash Mozambique, Reach AFCON Quarter-Finals

The Super Eagles of Nigeria delivered a commanding 4–0 triumph over Mozambique in Fès, securing a place in the quarter-finals of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in one of their most complete performances of the tournament.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute at Morocco’s Complexe Sportif de Fès, when Ademola Lookman finished with composure to give Nigeria the lead. Just five minutes later, Victor Osimhen doubled the advantage with a clinical finish after finding space inside the box, a two-goal cushion that reflected Nigeria’s dominance at half-time.

After the interval, Nigeria intensified their play, with Osimhen and Lookman linking effectively in the attacking third. In the 47th minute, Lookman turned provider, setting up Osimhen to complete his brace and effectively seal the contest.

Mozambique struggled to impose themselves, with winger Geny Catamo kept under control by a disciplined Nigerian defence marshalled superbly by Calvin Bassey. Nigeria added further polish to the scoreline in the 70th minute when Akor Adams struck the fourth goal, having earlier contributed two assists.

The victory marked Nigeria’s fourth consecutive win of the tournament, propelling the Super Eagles into the quarter-finals with confidence and momentum as the knockout stage approaches.

The result also saw Nigeria top the tournament’s scoring charts, registering 11 goals to edge past Senegal’s 10, highlighting the team’s attacking potency and intent.

From start to finish, Nigeria controlled the game’s tempo, combining intensity with tactical intelligence and capitalising on every opening with precision. Mozambique’s fairytale run came to an end.

The Super Eagles will now face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals, with the fixture set to be confirmed on Tuesday.

Monday’s AFCON Results:

  • Egypt 3–1 Benin Republic
  • Nigeria 4–0 Mozambique
