Russian air defence systems destroyed 34 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow in a series of overnight attacks that forced a temporary shutdown of two of the city’s airports, authorities said on Monday.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drones were intercepted over a six-hour period beginning shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday (1900 GMT). “All enemy drones were destroyed by air defence systems,” Sobyanin wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
Russia’s aviation regulator, Rosaviatsiya, said Domodedovo Airport and the smaller Zhukovsky Airport were closed for about two and a half hours from 2240 GMT to ensure flight safety.
In the neighbouring Tula region, 24 drones were shot down in the early hours of Monday, regional governor Dmitry Miliyaev reported, also via Telegram.

Officials did not provide details on possible damage or casualties. Russia has generally avoided revealing the extent of destruction from Ukrainian drone strikes unless civilian infrastructure is affected.
There was no immediate response from Kyiv. Ukrainian authorities have previously said that drone and missile attacks inside Russian territory are aimed at crippling logistics and infrastructure used to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
