No Decision Yet on LP, PDP National Officers – INEC

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that it has yet to decide on the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP), particularly regarding its national chairman and national secretary.

The clarification was made in a statement issued by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, in Abuja.

Oyekanmi also confirmed that the commission has not made any pronouncement on the position of the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Our attention has been drawn to certain media reports suggesting that the commission has recognised specific individuals as the national chairman and national secretary of the Labour Party.

“The reports also implied that the commission had reinstated an individual as national secretary of the PDP, based on entries on the INEC website.

“However, these reports are false and misleading. The commission has not made any such decisions regarding either the LP or the PDP,” Oyekanmi said.

He clarified that the names of LP’s national officers currently appearing on the INEC website were uploaded earlier in compliance with a court order unrelated to the recent Supreme Court judgement.

“In the same vein, the name of the PDP’s national secretary was neither removed nor restored on the commission’s website,” he added.

“As a law-abiding institution, the commission is carefully reviewing the Supreme Court’s decision on the Labour Party and will make its position known to the public in due course,” Oyekanmi concluded.
