NISO Begins Second Phase of System Operators’ Capacity Training

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has commenced the second phase of its capacity development programme for system operators, aimed at strengthening the safe and reliable management of the national electricity grid.

Declaring the training open, NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, said continuous professional development was essential to equip operators with the skills required to manage the growing complexities of the power system.

Mohammed said system operators needed technical expertise, sound judgement, discipline, teamwork and a strong commitment to safety.

He urged participants to deepen their knowledge of the Grid Code, describing it as a key standard governing the duties and responsibilities of system operators.

The Executive Director, System Operations, Engr. Nafisatu Ali, said operators were responsible for monitoring, coordinating and managing the national grid to ensure safe, secure and economical electricity supply.

She listed generation and power-flow coordination, load allocation, outage management, emergency response and maintenance planning among their key responsibilities.

Ali also stressed the need for effective coordination because of the interconnected nature of Nigeria’s electricity network.

She urged participants to improve their understanding of voltage and frequency control, power-flow monitoring, outage management and real-time balancing of generation and demand.

The Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services, Babajide Ibironke, said participants would be expected to share the knowledge gained with their respective teams in line with NISO’s knowledge-sharing policy.

NISO said the programme formed part of its broader efforts to build the human capacity needed to manage Nigeria’s evolving electricity system effectively.
