The Nigerian government has announced plans to create a special database for farmers, capturing information on the size and location of their farms to enable the identification and traceability of agricultural produce.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, disclosed the initiative while speaking in Maiduguri, Borno State, adding that the programme will be implemented in partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The minister explained that the registry will serve as a tool for the ministry to identify farmers eligible for government support and interventions. “This exercise will help us target assistance effectively and ensure that farmers benefit from our programmes,” he said.
