Nigeria Inaugurates Committees to Boost Security, Veterans’ Welfare

The Nigerian Government has inaugurated three technical committees to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework and improve the welfare of military veterans.

The Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, inaugurated the committees on Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja,

The committees include the Technical Committee on Integrated Border Security System, the Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan Committee, and the Committee on Veterans Welfare and Institutional Reform.

Musa said the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to translating defence policies into practical actions to address pressing security and institutional challenges.

He noted that the move is part of efforts to enhance operational readiness, improve coordination among security agencies, and ensure better welfare and recognition for veterans.

The minister stressed the need for a modern approach to securing Nigeria’s extensive land and maritime borders, calling for intelligence-driven and technology-based systems that support real-time information sharing and inter-agency collaboration.

He tasked the border security committee with reviewing existing frameworks, identifying operational gaps, and proposing integrated solutions to strengthen response capabilities.

On defence planning, Musa said the capital requirements committee would develop a realistic and prioritised investment plan spanning five to ten years, aligned with national security goals and available resources.

He added that the committee would assess current infrastructure, identify capability gaps, and project future needs in response to emerging threats and technological developments.

Addressing veterans’ welfare, the minister said the third committee would focus on improving support systems, enhancing access to services, and introducing a standardised national dress code to promote dignity and recognition for retired personnel.

He urged members of the committees to carry out their assignments with professionalism, transparency, and accountability, while engaging relevant stakeholders to achieve value-driven outcomes.

Musa also directed the committees to submit comprehensive reports, including implementation strategies, within one month, assuring them of the ministry’s full support.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, commended the minister’s initiative and called on committee members to approach their assignments with patriotism and dedication.
