Nigeria has conveyed heartfelt congratulations to the Government and citizens of The Gambia on the occasion of their Independence Day, marking the country’s attainment of self-rule in 1965.
In a goodwill message released in Abuja by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, extended Nigeria’s best wishes to his Gambian counterpart, Sering Modou Njie. He described the anniversary as a testament to The Gambia’s sustained dedication to democratic governance, national cohesion and sovereign nationhood.
The message emphasised that as Gambians commemorate the historic occasion with nationwide celebrations and parades, Nigeria stands in firm solidarity with them, acknowledging the resilience and democratic progress the country has demonstrated over the years.

Both nations, the statement noted, have continued to collaborate in advancing democratic principles, fostering regional peace and promoting economic cooperation across West Africa.
The Minister pointed to the robust bilateral ties between Abuja and Banjul, which encompass political dialogue, security cooperation, trade, education and technical support. These engagements, he said, are aligned with broader regional aspirations, including peacebuilding, democratic consolidation and economic integration under ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Reiterating Nigeria’s resolve to further strengthen relations, the Minister underscored the need to expand cooperation in mutually beneficial areas and to deepen people-to-people connections that reflect shared African values and collective advancement.
Nigeria also expressed its best wishes for The Gambia’s continued peace, democratic stability and sustainable development as the country progresses on its national path.
