Nigeria Condemns Attempted Coup in Benin

The Nigerian Government has strongly condemned the attempted forceful seizure of power in the Republic of Benin in the early hours of Sunday, 7 December 2025.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa, described any act of destabilisation as a direct attack on democracy, constitutional order and the collective will of the Beninese people, who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to peaceful political transitions.

Nigeria reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Benin, while commending the prompt actions taken by the Beninese authorities to protect legitimate institutions and maintain national stability.

The statement also praised the courage and professionalism of the Beninese security forces for their role in defending the constitutional order and ensuring the safety of the President, noting that their dedication ensured the failed attempt to undermine democracy was firmly thwarted.

Reiterating its steadfast commitment to democracy, good governance and the rule of law as key pillars for peace, development and regional stability, Nigeria stressed that unconstitutional changes of government are unacceptable and retrogressive, posing serious threats to the democratic achievements and socio-economic progress recorded across the sub-region.

Nigeria further urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the international community to collectively denounce the coup attempt and reaffirm their commitment to the African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, as well as the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

The Government also called on all stakeholders in the Republic of Benin to remain calm, uphold the rule of law and pursue political engagement through peaceful, constitutional and democratic means.

Nigeria concluded by assuring the Government of the Republic of Benin of its full support and continued cooperation, reaffirming its resolve to work closely as neighbours and partners to strengthen democracy and promote lasting peace and prosperity across the West African region.
