Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has called for elections by July 2027, saying there is sufficient time to prepare for the vote, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
Machado also called for transparency in the management of proceeds from Venezuela’s oil sales, which are being overseen by the United States, in an interview with the newspaper.
She said both the US government and the Venezuelan people agreed that establishing a stable democracy was essential to ensuring a sustainable outcome for Venezuela.
“The US government and the Venezuelan people all agree that the only way to make this sustainable and a real victory is to turn Venezuela into a stable democracy,” Machado said.
Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025, said preparations could be completed in time for elections by July.
