FC Barcelona have completed the signing of promising young goalkeeper Joan García from city rivals Espanyol, strengthening their goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.
The 23-year-old, who emerged as a standout performer for Espanyol in recent campaigns, joins the Catalan giants following the activation of his release clause, reported to be in the region of €10 million.
Barcelona confirmed the deal in an official statement on Tuesday, describing García as “a talented and composed shot-stopper with great potential for the future.”
The Spain U21 international impressed with a string of solid performances last season, despite Espanyol’s struggles in La Liga. His quick reflexes, distribution, and command of the penalty area have drawn comparisons with some of the league’s top keepers.

García’s arrival is expected to provide competition and long-term cover for Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, with the club looking to build squad depth in all positions.
In his farewell message, García thanked Espanyol fans and staff for their support. “It’s been an honour to wear the Espanyol shirt. I will always carry this club in my heart. Now, I’m ready for a new challenge and to give my best for FC Barcelona,” he said.
The move has sparked reactions from both sets of supporters, given the intense city rivalry between Barça and Espanyol. While some Espanyol fans expressed disappointment at the loss, others wished García well in his career progression.
Barcelona will unveil García officially in the coming days, with pre-season training set to begin next month.
