Governor Chukwuma Soludo has launched the Torch of Unity Movement in Awka, Anambra State, as part of preparations for the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games, set to take place in Ogun State from 16 to 30 May 2025.

The torch was formally presented to the Governor, represented by Chief Chinedu Nwoye Glamour, the State Chief Protocol Officer, by a delegation from the National Sports Commission (NSC) during a ceremony held at the Government House, Awka.

In his remarks, Governor Soludo commended the NSC for its instrumental role in promoting peace and unity through sport. He reaffirmed Anambra State’s readiness to participate actively in the upcoming festival and emphasised his administration’s unwavering commitment to developing a supportive environment for sports within the state.

“Sport is a unifying force and a catalyst for youth engagement, national cohesion, and economic growth,” he said, urging both public and private sector stakeholders to invest in the development of sports infrastructure, talent discovery, athlete support, and event sponsorship across Nigeria.

Mr Patrick Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, stressed the importance of greater collaboration to unlock Nigeria’s vast sporting potential. He described the Torch of Unity as a symbol of peace, strength, and solidarity, noting its nationwide journey through all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in the lead-up to the festival.

“This festival offers a vital platform for states and the FCT to demonstrate their athletic capabilities through healthy competition and camaraderie, thereby reinforcing national unity,” Onyedum remarked.

Governor Soludo further reflected on the symbolic significance of the games, stating: “They are far more than a display of athleticism; they reflect the unity, resilience, and shared strength that define us as a people. Each step we take towards this festival is a renewed affirmation of our collective resolve to build a stronger nation through sport.”
