Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) is celebrating the second anniversary of its current Executive Management team, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting two years of accelerated growth in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and sovereign cloud development.
Since the appointment of Managing Director Prof. Ibrahim A. Adeyanju and his executive team including Honourable Olusegun Olulade (Executive Director, Customer Centricity and Marketing), Muhammed Sani Ibrahim (Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Services), and Olumbe Akinkugbe (Executive Director, Digital Exploration and Technical Services) the organisation has evolved from a connectivity service provider into a key driver of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
In a statement issued by the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Chidi Okpala, the agency outlined major milestones recorded within the two-year period.
Under Project 774, broadband services were extended to nine previously underserved Local Government Areas, expanding digital inclusion to communities that lacked reliable internet access. Fibre-to-Hostel infrastructure was also deployed at the University of Lagos, the University of Abuja, and the University of Jos, significantly improving research capabilities and digital learning environments.

Connectivity upgrades were carried out at critical national assets, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and major Federal Secretariats, strengthening operational efficiency and service stability.
To reinforce long-term digital resilience, GBB entered into a strategic partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), one of Africa’s leading inter-connected carrier-scale digital infrastructure providers. The collaboration enhanced Nigeria’s fibre backbone, improved network redundancy, and created capacity for broadband expansion across additional states and underserved areas, thereby fortifying the country’s digital resilience framework.
Strengthening Sovereign Digital Capacity
A central pillar of the agency’s reforms has been the enhancement of the “1Government Cloud” platform, designed to streamline digital services for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). As part of this initiative, GBB introduced GovMail, a locally developed secure email solution now serving more than 100,000 public and civil servants nationwide.
To guarantee service reliability, the agency established a 24-hour service desk and strengthened its cybersecurity architecture with continuous monitoring systems. The rollout of the Government-as-a-Platform (GaaP) framework, alongside ISO recertifications, has further institutionalised best practices and operational standards.
Despite fiscal pressures and increasing cyber threats, Galaxy Backbone has earned more than 20 industry recognitions, including the NET5.5G Pioneer Award and the Best ICT Provider Company of the Year award.
