FRSC Confirms 21 Dead in Kano Highway Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 21 people lost their lives in a fatal road crash on Sunday in Dakatsale, Kano State.

According to Assistant Corps Marshal and FRSC Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the incident occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsale, along the Zaria–Kano Expressway. It involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF truck.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by a route violation by the commercial bus driver, who was driving against traffic. This led to a head-on collision with the oncoming truck, resulting in multiple casualties.

“Of the 24 persons involved, 21 died including 19 adult males and two adult females while three others sustained injuries,” Ogungbemide said.

The deceased were transported to Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, while the injured are currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed facility. FRSC personnel, with support from other emergency responders, cleared the crash site and restored normal traffic flow.

Reacting to the tragedy, FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed extended condolences to the victims’ families and announced that a full investigation is underway.

Mohammed cautioned motorists particularly commercial and truck drivers against dangerous practices such as driving against traffic, speeding, and unsafe overtaking, which he noted are major contributors to road fatalities in Nigeria.

He emphasized that adherence to traffic regulations is critical for safeguarding lives and maintaining road safety nationwide.

Reaffirming the FRSC’s commitment to enforcement and public education, the Corps Marshal encouraged citizens to report reckless driving via the FRSC mobile app, toll-free number 122, or any nearby patrol unit.
