The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised the need for sustained investment in inclusive and high-quality education to prepare Nigeria’s children and youth for national development.
Delivering her 2026 International Day of Education message , Mrs Tinubu highlighted the central role of education in equipping society to navigate a fast-changing global landscape.
“Education remains the most powerful tool for acquiring knowledge, ethical judgement, creativity, and values, particularly in an age dominated by innovation and automation,” she said.
The First Lady noted that skills- and value-based learning is crucial for success in a technology-driven world and called on Nigeria to make education a top priority.
Reflecting on this year’s International Day of Education theme, ‘AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,’ she urged that technological advancements be harnessed to serve humanity rather than replace it.
“As we integrate artificial intelligence and innovation into our systems, humans must remain the decision-makers, using technology to enhance our abilities while upholding the values that drive sustainable development,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu further stated, “Investing in quality, inclusive education will empower our children and youth to think critically, act responsibly, and approach the future with confidence and compassion.”
International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24, was established by the United Nations to recognise education’s fundamental role in promoting peace, development, human rights, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty and advancing gender equality.
