Explosions have been reported on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and in the southern port city of Jask, according to Iranian media, although their cause remains unclear.
The reports emerged on Saturday, with no official confirmation from Iranian authorities about the source of the explosions.
Earlier, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that two missiles had struck Qeshm Island, but provided no official information on possible damage.
The reported explosions came days after the United States carried out strikes on the island. A US official described the attacks as limited, saying they did not mark a resumption of major combat operations.
Countries in the region had been anticipating that US President Donald Trump could resume attacks on Iran after Tuesday’s midterm elections, having held off on further strikes in the weeks leading up to the vote.
Iran has repeatedly warned that it would retaliate against any new attacks by targeting US and Israeli interests in neighbouring countries.
