Madagascar’s coup leader Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who seized power earlier this month, has appointed businessman and consultant Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as the island nation’s new prime minister.
Randrianirina was sworn in as president on Friday, days after taking control following youth-led protests that toppled his predecessor.

Announcing the appointment on Monday, Randrianirina said Rajaonarivelo was chosen for his experience and “connections with the international organizations that work with us.”
Former president Andry Rajoelina, who fled the country last weekend before lawmakers voted to impeach him, has condemned the military takeover and vowed not to step down while in exile. His stance comes despite defections within the security forces and the High Constitutional Court’s swift ratification of the coup.
