The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Ltd is set to continue its nationwide outreach with the upcoming edition of the Regional Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT Training Programme, scheduled for the South-South region, and co-hosted by Cross River State and NIGCOMSAT Ltd.

The event will take place in Calabar, Cross River State, from 21 to 26 July 2025, and is open to start-ups, local innovators, and students across the region.

Spearheaded by NIGCOMSAT Ltd, the initiative aims to empower and inspire young Nigerians by bringing together university students, tech innovators, and young professionals from the South-South to develop creative solutions to real-world challenges through satellite and space-based technologies.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director/CEO of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, stated that the five-day hackathon will provide participants the platform to identify community challenges, develop ideas, build prototypes and benefit from mentorship by industry experts.

The winning team will secure a coveted place in the “NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025,” gaining access to further resources, exposure and support for project implementation.

100 young individuals will be trained in the installation, configuration and maintenance of Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) systems, a technology widely used to deliver broadband internet in underserved areas.

Participants will receive certification, equipping them with in-demand skills and positioning them for employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in Nigeria’s growing ICT sector.

It may be recalled that earlier editions of the programme were successfully held in Yola, Adamawa State (February 24–28, 2025), and Dutse, Jigawa State (April 7–11, 2025), both of which witnessed strong participation and laid the groundwork for continued regional impact.

The overall vision of the Space-Tech Hackathon and VSAT Training Programme is to harness Nigeria’s youth potential, promote innovation, and offer scalable, tech-driven solutions to community challenges, while tackling youth unemployment across the nation.
