British High Commissioner Cautions Nigerians Against Visa Fraud

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Richard Montgomery, has advised Nigerians to remain alert to the dangers of visa-related fraud.

Speaking at the UK-Nigeria Economic Growth Conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Montgomery encouraged applicants to utilise official channels and provide accurate documentation when applying for a UK visa.

Addressing concerns over visa refusals, he reassured the public that many Nigerians continue to receive UK visas successfully. He disclosed that the United Kingdom processes approximately 1,500 visa applications daily from Nigeria.

According to the High Commissioner, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians are granted visas annually, accounting for roughly 10 per cent of all visitors to the UK.

He emphasised that Nigeria remains a key contributor to UK visitor numbers, out of over 37.9 million annual visitors, reflecting the historic ties and growing bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Montgomery described this figure as a clear indication of the enduring and deepening connections between the UK and Nigeria.

He further explained that the majority of visa applications are approved when applicants adhere to the correct procedures and provide the necessary documentation. Most visa denials, he noted, stem from issues with supporting documents rather than from a lack of eligibility.

Montgomery outlined the various application options available to Nigerians, including standard, priority, and super priority services.

He also emphasised that legitimate business travellers can access multiple visa routes, provided they follow the correct processes.

The High Commissioner reaffirmed the UK’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its relationship with Nigeria, pledging continued cooperation and mutual growth.
