Brazil Set to Regulate Social Media, Lula Confirms

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday that a proposal to regulate social media platforms in the country is ready and will be sent to Congress.

In an interview with news outlet BandNews, Lula said the proposal would be on his desk by Wednesday afternoon so the government can forward it to lawmakers.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently imposed 50% tariffs on imports of Brazilian goods, linking the move to what he called a “witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro and to “unfair trade practices” by Brazil, particularly concerning U.S. companies in the digital trade sector.

Lula said he hopes to meet Trump one day and that they can talk in a civilized manner as two heads of state.

The Brazilian leader also said he had sent a letter to Trump inviting him to attend the global climate summit, COP30, which is set to be held in Brazil later this year.

Additionally, Lula said he plans to call leaders from France, Germany, and the European Union next week to discuss the ongoing negotiations over the trade deal between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur.
