The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called for a strategic shift in Nigeria’s security approach and stronger collaboration with state governors to tackle persistent violence in parts of the country.
General Musa made the call during a visit to Yelewata community, a border town between Benue and Nasarawa States, which recently witnessed attacks by suspected herders. Addressing stakeholders, he outlined immediate measures to prevent further bloodshed and appealed to Nigerians to rally behind security agencies as they work to restore peace and stability.
He emphasised that defeating insecurity requires collective effort from the military, traditional rulers, community leaders, and clan heads. “Unity among all parties is essential not only to save lives but to create an environment conducive to future growth,” he said. The Defence Chief also urged Nigerian youth to remain steadfast and resilient in their service to the nation.
General Musa extended his condolences to the Governor and people of Benue State over the tragic loss of lives, noting that efforts were underway to enhance the security situation in the wake of recent attacks.

In a related development, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the immediate deployment of personnel to reclaim territories in Benue State that have fallen into the hands of armed bandits. The directive followed a meeting with Governor Hyacinth Alia in Makurdi, the state capital.
The IGP reassured the Governor and victims’ families of the police force’s commitment to justice. He stressed the importance of close cooperation between federal security bodies and state authorities in restoring lasting peace.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to curb criminality across the nation.
Following the high-level security meetings, the IGP and Governor Alia reiterated their dedication to joint operations to confront the state’s security threats. A combined security team subsequently joined General Musa in Yelewata to reinforce security measures in the volatile region.
These coordinated actions signal a broader, unified strategy by Nigeria’s security leadership to address the root causes of regional violence and create a safer, more secure environment for all communities.
