The Akwa Ibom State Government has paid ₦97.03 billion in outstanding gratuities to pensioners, reducing the ₦111 billion backlog inherited by the administration of Governor Umo Eno.
The government has also approved ₦3.9 billion for the payment of 2026 leave grants to serving civil servants across the state.
The latest gratuity payment forms part of the administration’s efforts to settle outstanding obligations to retired public servants and improve their welfare.
In a separate measure, Governor Eno approved ₦3,909,182,952.65 for the 2026 leave grants of serving workers.
The grants will be paid in three tranches, beginning in September, with subsequent disbursements scheduled for October and November.
According to the state government, the phased payment will ensure the funds are released in an orderly manner while providing workers with timely financial support.

It said the two interventions were consistent with its people-centred approach under the ARISE Agenda, which prioritises the welfare of serving and retired public servants.
The government added that clearing the gratuity backlog was aimed at honouring legitimate entitlements, restoring confidence in the public service and easing the financial burden on pensioners who had waited years for payment.
The state reaffirmed its commitment to policies aimed at improving working conditions, strengthening public institutions and enhancing the wellbeing of residents.
