NNPC Confirms Gas Pipeline Explosion in Rivers Community

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed an explosion on a gas pipeline operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Thursday, Oct. 15, prompting the company to isolate the affected section of the pipeline and activate emergency response procedures to contain the situation.

NNPC Ltd disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, Oct. 16, adding that it was working with relevant regulators, security agencies and other stakeholders to assess the damage and determine the cause of the explosion.

The company acknowledged reports of injuries and damage to homes and businesses in the affected community but said investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the incident.

Local media reports have given varying accounts of the time of the explosion and the number of people reportedly injured and properties affected. However, the figures have not been independently verified.

Reports also indicated that residents had raised concerns about a possible gas leak for about three weeks before the explosion.

The leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, Daniel Chuma, was reportedly said to have petitioned the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) over the alleged leak. NNPC Ltd, however, did not include the claims in its statement.

The company is expected to focus on securing the affected area, determining the condition of the pipeline and identifying the necessary measures to ensure the safe restoration of any affected infrastructure.

The incident has raised concerns about pipeline safety and the potential consequences for host communities and energy infrastructure.

Gas supply disruptions can affect industrial operations, particularly facilities that depend on natural gas for fuel or as a production input. Gas-fired power plants could also face operational challenges if supplies through the affected pipeline are interrupted.

However, there is no confirmed information indicating that the explosion has disrupted wider gas supplies or electricity generation.

The extent of the damage, the pipeline’s operational status and the duration of the emergency response will be crucial in determining the incident’s implications for industrial users and the energy sector.

The investigation is expected to establish whether the explosion resulted from equipment failure, operational problems, external interference, a leak or another cause.

NNPC Ltd has yet to disclose the cause of the explosion, making it premature to assign responsibility for the incident.

The incident also underscores the importance of regular pipeline maintenance, effective emergency response and communication with host communities to improve infrastructure safety and reduce the risk of similar occurrences.

Further details from the company and relevant authorities are expected to clarify the extent of the damage, the findings of the investigation and any measures required to restore the affected infrastructure safely.
