At least 28 people have died after a landslide hit an illegal gold mining site in northwestern Bengo province, Angola, authorities have said.
Four other people were rescued before search operations were concluded, according to the province’s civil protection and fire service.
The victims of Saturday’s incident were aged between 16 and 35, officials said.
Illegal mining in Angola has traditionally been linked to diamonds, but the country’s push to diversify its mining sector has led to a rise in artisanal gold mining and other metals.
Angola, a major diamond producer, is also expanding into minerals such as copper and gold as diamond prices decline and synthetic diamonds gain ground.
