The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a humanitarian assistance programme in Senegal aimed at supporting refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, and asylum seekers, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to human dignity, regional solidarity, and inclusive development.
The initiative was inaugurated by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, alongside senior government officials, including the President of Senegal’s Chief of Staff and Chairman of the National Committee for the Management of Repatriated Refugees and Displaced Persons. Representatives from the UNHCR, displaced communities from Casamance, and Mauritanian refugees in the Senegal River Valley were also present, as well as key development partners.

Implemented by the Senegalese government through the National Committee for the Management of Repatriated Refugees and Displaced Persons, with support from UNHCR, the programme is valued at over five hundred thousand dollars.
It is designed to provide life-saving assistance, support sustainable livelihoods, and ease the burden on host communities. In addition, the initiative aims to foster peaceful coexistence, strengthen national capacities, and promote inclusive, long-term solutions for vulnerable populations.
