Japan’s northeast experienced fresh tremors  on Friday after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami advisory for waves reaching up to 1 metre.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the tremor occurred at 11:44 a.m. (0244 GMT) at a depth of 20 kilometres. Coastal communities were urged to move away from the shoreline as officials assessed the risk of incoming waves.
Friday’s quake came only days after a more powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the same region late on Monday, raising concerns about heightened seismic activity.
Following Monday’s tremor, the government released a special advisory urging residents across a wide stretch of the country from Hokkaido in the far north to Chiba, east of Tokyo to remain vigilant. Authorities warned that the likelihood of another major earthquake remains elevated for at least a week.
Emergency teams and local governments are monitoring the situation, with further updates expected as assessments continue.
