Tanzania President Nominates Mwigulu Nchemba as Prime Minister

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Thursday nominated former finance minister Mwigulu Nchemba as the country’s new prime minister, following last month’s disputed general election.

Parliament is widely expected to approve his appointment later on Thursday, as President Hassan secured a landslide victory in the October 29 vote.

Opposition parties have alleged that Hassan’s government rigged the election, prompting violent protests after the exclusion of her main challengers. The United Nations Human Rights Office has reported that hundreds of people were killed in the unrest, while opposition groups and human rights activists claim that more than 1,000 deaths occurred. The government has described these figures as exaggerated but has not provided an official death toll.

President Hassan, who has been in office since 2021, defended the election’s fairness and rejected criticism of her human rights record.
