Zimbabwe Sack Coach Michael Nees Ahead of AFCON

Zimbabwe have dismissed their German coach, Michael Nees, following a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign, just two months before the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

Nees, who was appointed in August last year, spent 14 months in charge and led Zimbabwe to qualification for the continental tournament. However, his side struggled in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, finishing bottom of their group after drawing three matches and losing three.

Under his tenure, the 58-year-old managed only two wins from 14 matches. The Zimbabwe Football Association announced his dismissal on Wednesday, saying the search for a new head coach would begin immediately to ensure readiness for the Cup of Nations.

Zimbabwe are drawn in Group B alongside Egypt, whom they face in their opening match in Agadir on 22 December.

Before his stint with Zimbabwe, Nees worked with the national teams of Seychelles and Rwanda and also served as a technical director in Israel and Kosovo.
