Benue Governor Appoints 23 Point Men to Deepen Grassroots Democracy

Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has appointed 23 point men across the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state to strengthen democracy and deepen inclusive participation among the people.

Alia, who announced the appointments in Makurdi during an expanded caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the appointees would coordinate APC activities in their respective LGAs and reinforce the party’s presence at the grassroots.

The governor charged the appointees to be good ambassadors of both the party and his administration, urging them to embark on an intensive membership drive across the state.

He also encouraged them to promote the APC and make it a preferred choice for all Benue residents.

Alia called on the coordinators to connect with people at the grassroots and ensure that government interventions reach local communities, warning that anyone found diverting resources meant for the people would be held accountable.

He further advised them to collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure that citizens fully participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise.

The governor promised to provide the necessary support for their mobilisation efforts, describing the voter registration as a crucial exercise, especially with the general elections approaching.

Alia condemned the practice of bringing all political disagreements to him in Makurdi, saying the newly appointed point men would now be responsible for resolving some of such issues, while only matters beyond their control should be referred to him.

He also directed the coordinators to identify and submit names of 200 artisans across the state for job opportunities, as well as 800 young people willing to travel abroad for skills acquisition programmes.

The governor, however, stated that all selected individuals must obtain a certificate of fitness from the Father Adasu University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

Alia expressed appreciation to members of the APC for their continuous support and urged them to remain united.

He assured that his administration would continue to uphold fairness, transparency, responsibility, and accountability, adding that the APC was a party that “cannot settle for less.”
