Two people were killed and several others injured in Lqliaa, near Agadir, on Wednesday night when security forces opened fire to stop a group attempting to seize weapons from a gendarmerie post, local authorities said.
The incident marked a deadly escalation of anti-government protests, initially launched on Saturday by the anonymous youth movement “GenZ 212” to demand better education and healthcare. The group, inspired by similar youth-led movements abroad, has mobilised tens of thousands online through TikTok, Instagram, and Discord.
Authorities said firearms were used in self-defence after protesters armed with knives stormed the gendarmerie, set part of the facility and a vehicle ablaze, and ignored tear gas.
Unrest Spreads Nationwide
Violence later spread to Salé, Tangier, Biougra, Sidi Bibi, and Marrakech, where banks, shops, and police stations were attacked, witnesses said. Peaceful rallies were, however, held in Casablanca, Oujda, and Taza.
