Nigeria Backs China’s Global Governance Initiative

Nigeria has endorsed the newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), introduced by China at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus meeting in Tianjin, positioning the country at the forefront of efforts to reform the global order.

Building on the foundations of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), the GGI focuses on enhancing global representation, adherence to international law, and addressing critical challenges such as climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.

In a statement, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, described the initiative as a timely contribution, especially ahead of the United Nations’ 80th anniversary.

“Nigeria, as one of Africa’s largest economies and an active player in multilateral diplomacy, sees the GGI as a valuable platform to advance shared priorities, including UN reform, inclusive governance in emerging fields such as AI, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development,” Ebienfa stated.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s strong support for the initiative’s five core principles: Sovereign Equality, Rule of Law, Multilateralism, People-Centered Governance, and Results-Oriented Action.

Ebienfa emphasized that the GGI aligns closely with Nigeria’s national development goals, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

“Nigeria remains committed to working with partners across the Global South to build consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to a sustainable and equitable global order,” he said.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s position, Ebienfa concluded: “By supporting the GGI, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to a fairer, more inclusive, and effective international system one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds the principles of shared responsibility and mutual respect.”
