Al Ahly Crash Out of Club World Cup

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have bowed out of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup following a dramatic 4–4 draw against FC Porto at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.

Despite a spirited performance and a hat-trick from Wessam Abou Ali, the result was not enough to secure progression from Group A, as both teams finished with two points and were eliminated from the competition.

Al Ahly opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Abou Ali, who doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. The forward completed his treble with a powerful header six minutes after the restart, before Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane added a fourth in the 64th minute, seemingly putting the match beyond reach.

However, Porto mounted an astonishing comeback, with goals from Rodrigo Mora, William Gomes, and Samu Aghehowa dragging the Portuguese side back into contention. Pepê’s 89th-minute equaliser sealed the draw and, ultimately, the fate of both clubs.

The result means Inter Miami and Palmeiras, who both amassed five points in the group, advanced to the knockout stage, leaving Al Ahly and Porto to exit the tournament without a win.

Al Ahly had earlier drawn goalless with Inter Miami and suffered a 2–0 defeat to Palmeiras. While their tournament ends prematurely, the Cairo-based club can take pride in the attacking display and resilience shown in their final group fixture.
