Asaba 2025: Team Ekiti Clinches Gold in Basketball

Team Ekiti on Thursday won gold in men’s basketball at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

The side edged past Team Lagos 19–18 in a tightly contested final to secure the top medal. Both teams played with composure, determination and confidence, but Ekiti displayed greater resilience to triumph.

Reacting to the victory, State Basketball Coach Adetayo Awojinrin expressed delight at his players’ performance.

“I am happy God crowned our efforts with success. In spite of the tough matches we encountered at the group stage, we were able to defeat Lagos in the final. I am proud of the team, and I believe with this unique success they will win more gold medals in future,” he said.

In Kungfu, Funbi Adedoyin claimed bronze in the 48kg female category. State Head Coach Ronke Raji commended her for making the state proud despite tough competition from other states.

Meanwhile, para-athlete Suleiman Abdulazeez won gold in discus and silver in shot put.

Three outstanding athletes from Team Ekiti have also been invited to the National Federation for their respective sports. They are Abdulazeez Suleiman (para-athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon) and Damilola Oni (cricket).

So far, Team Ekiti has secured a total of two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
