UK Announces Major Overhaul of Asylum Policy

Britain has unveiled plans for the most extensive reform of its asylum seeker policy in modern history, as the Labour government moves to tighten controls on illegal small-boat crossings from France.

The measures are seen as an effort to curb the rising popularity of the populist Reform UK party, which has focused heavily on immigration.

The Home Office announced that the statutory duty to provide support including housing and weekly allowances will be revoked for certain asylum seekers. The changes are aimed at individuals who are able to work but choose not to, as well as those who break the law. Taxpayer-funded assistance will be prioritised for those contributing to the economy and local communities.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the reforms are intended to make Britain less attractive to illegal migrants and to streamline their removal. “This country has a proud tradition of welcoming those fleeing danger, but our generosity is drawing illegal migrants across the Channel,” Mahmood stated. She added that “the pace and scale of migration is placing immense pressure on communities.”

The announcement has drawn criticism from over 100 British charities, who wrote to Mahmood urging her to “end the scapegoating of migrants and performative policies that only cause harm,” warning that such measures could fuel racism and violence.

According to the Home Office, the reforms will take inspiration from Denmark and other European countries, where refugee status is temporary, support is conditional, and integration is expected. “The UK will now match and in some areas exceed these standards,” the department said.

Further details on the policy are expected to be provided by Mahmood in the coming days.
