Trump Launches Immigration Enforcement Crackdown in New Orleans

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he would not consider running for vice president in 2028 but declined to rule out seeking a third term, fuelling speculation about his political future and possible attempts to extend his time in office beyond constitutional limits.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route from Malaysia to Tokyo, Trump dismissed the idea of serving as vice president as “too cute,” saying, “I wouldn’t do that. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It wouldn’t be right.”

However, when pressed about the possibility of a third presidential bid, the 79-year-old leader offered an ambiguous response: “I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever… Am I not ruling it out? I mean, you’ll have to tell me.”

Trump has repeatedly joked at rallies about serving beyond the constitutionally mandated two terms, even promoting “Trump 2028” merchandise, remarks that have prompted both amusement and concern among political observers. Some of his allies have suggested exploring legal or political loopholes to enable a third term ideas widely dismissed by constitutional experts.

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution bars anyone from being elected president more than twice, while the 12th Amendment states that anyone ineligible to serve as president cannot hold the office of vice president. Legal scholars have therefore said Trump would be constitutionally barred from either role beyond his current term.

When asked whether he would be willing to challenge the constitutional prohibition in court, Trump said, “I haven’t really thought about it.”

Despite his age, Trump  who would be 82 in 2028 maintains a demanding schedule and often engages directly with the media, showcasing his energy and continued influence within the Republican Party.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump frequently criticised former President Joe Biden’s age and fitness for office, portraying himself as more vigorous and mentally sharp.

On Monday, Trump praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “great people” who could seek the presidency in 2028. “If they ever formed a group, it’d be unstoppable,” he said, prompting laughter from Rubio, who was travelling with him.

Trump’s latest comments have reignited debate within Republican ranks over the party’s post-2028 leadership. Some of his closest allies, including former White House strategist Steve Bannon, have openly supported the idea of Trump remaining in power. In a recent interview, Bannon claimed there was a plan to “circumvent the 22nd Amendment,” calling Trump “an instrument of divine will.”
