Reggae Icon Jimmy Cliff Dies at 81

Jimmy Cliff, one of reggae music’s most iconic and beloved figures, has died at the age of 81, his family announced.

Cliff’s wife, Latifa Chambers, confirmed his passing on Instagram, saying he succumbed to a seizure followed by pneumonia. The statement, also signed by their children Lilty and Aken, paid tribute to his family, friends, and fellow artists.

Born James Chambers in 1944, Cliff grew up in extreme poverty as the eighth of nine children in the parish of St. James, Jamaica. He began singing in his local church at the age of six and was inspired to write his own songs after hearing ska pioneer Derrick Morgan on the radio.

By age 14, he had moved to Kingston and adopted the surname Cliff to symbolise the heights he aspired to reach. He recorded several singles before topping the Jamaican charts with his composition Hurricane Hattie.

In 1965, he relocated to London to work with Island Records, a label later associated with Bob Marley. Despite early challenges in appealing to rock audiences, Cliff emerged as a global star, helping to bring the sound of Jamaica to the world with hits such as Wonderful World, Beautiful People and You Can Get It If You Really Want.

His 1969 singles Wonderful World, Beautiful People and the politically charged Vietnam which Bob Dylan described as “the best protest song ever written”cemented his legacy.

Cliff continued performing well into his later years, appearing at Glastonbury in 2003 and Coachella in 2010, winning over new generations of fans.

In recognition of his contributions to Jamaican music and culture, he was awarded the country’s prestigious Order of Merit in October 2003.

Jimmy Cliff leaves behind a profound legacy as a global ambassador of reggae and Jamaican culture.
