The Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud Nigeria, Dr John Nwabueze, has assured Nigerians of impartial and cost-free resolution of tax-related disputes as part of efforts to improve confidence in the country’s tax system.
Speaking during a media chat in Lagos, Nwabueze said the Office of the Tax Ombud was established by the Nigerian government to provide relief to taxpayers and address grievances arising from interactions with tax and revenue authorities.
“The office was created to offer relief to taxpayers and resolve disputes that may arise in the course of dealing with tax authorities. Where there are disagreements, we will ensure they are resolved impartially, fairly, and at no cost to the taxpayer,” he said.
He emphasised that the initiative is designed to strengthen trust in the tax system while ensuring that taxpayers are not burdened by prolonged or expensive dispute processes.
Addressing concerns about multiple taxation, Nwabueze assured business owners that the office is already working to tackle the issue, noting that several related cases have been brought forward.
He further called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, particularly the Joint Revenue Board, chairmen of state revenue authorities, and tax administrators across the 36 states, to develop coordinated solutions to persistent tax challenges.
Nwabueze also assured Nigerians that modalities for accessing the office’s services would be widely communicated, stressing that all services would remain free of charge.
In his remarks, the Chief Press Secretary to the Tax Ombud, Chukwudi Achife, described the office as a major innovation aimed at simplifying tax processes and supporting businesses.
“Tax Ombud is a significant relief for Nigerians. Complaints will now be addressed promptly and without cost, unlike the lengthy and often expensive processes associated with tribunals,” Achife said.
He added that taxpayers can access the office through phone calls or via its website, eliminating the need for physical travel to resolve tax-related issues.
The Office of the Tax Ombud, a government agency established under the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act 2025, is mandated to provide independent oversight and intervention in tax disputes nationwide.
The establishment of the Tax Ombud is widely seen as a step towards improving Nigeria’s tax administration system and creating a more business-friendly environment.
