MTN Returns to Profit on Nigeria, Ghana Growth

MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecommunications operator, has returned to profitability, reporting a pre-tax profit of 47.4 billion rand ($2.81 billion) for the year ended December 31.

The South Africa-headquartered telecoms giant said the turnaround was largely driven by strong performances in its key West African markets, particularly MTN Nigeria and MTN Ghana.

The company had reported a restated loss before tax of 4.1 billion rand in 2024, making the latest result a significant recovery for the group.

According to the company, service revenue rose by 22.7 per cent to 218.5 billion rand during the period, supported by strong growth in Nigeria and Ghana.

MTN said service revenue in Nigeria grew by 54.9 per cent, while Ghana recorded 35.9 per cent growth, highlighting the importance of the two markets to the group’s overall performance.

In its home market, however, MTN South Africa posted a modest 2 per cent growth in service revenue, reflecting intense competition in the prepaid segment.

The telecoms operator also announced a final dividend of 500 cents per share, representing a 45 per cent increase compared to the previous payout.

The latest financial results underscore MTN’s continued reliance on its high-growth African markets as it seeks to strengthen earnings and expand digital and telecommunications services across the continent.
