Kano to Enrol One Million vulnerable Under Health Scheme

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has announced plans to enrol one million vulnerable residents under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

The initiative is designed to broaden access to essential healthcare services and enhance financial risk protection for indigent and underserved communities across Kano State.

The resolution followed a high-level meeting held on Monday in Kano, where senior technical officials and key stakeholders reviewed operational frameworks, beneficiary identification processes, data harmonisation strategies and implementation timelines.

The Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr Rahila Muktar, described the programme as a significant stride towards attaining Universal Health Coverage in the state. She noted that enrolling one million vulnerable residents represents a transformative milestone in expanding equitable healthcare access.

“We are committed to ensuring transparency, accountability and data integrity throughout the process,” Muktar said.

She added that the exercise aligns with the current administration’s healthcare reform agenda and is expected to substantially reduce out-of-pocket health expenditure among vulnerable populations.

Earlier, the NHIA State Coordinator, Adamu Abdullahi, reaffirmed the authority’s readiness to provide regulatory oversight and technical support to guarantee adherence to national standards.

“Sustained collaboration between federal and state institutions is critical to strengthening healthcare financing reforms and achieving measurable health outcomes,” Abdullahi said.

He further explained that the partnership would improve coordination and enhance service delivery at the primary healthcare level.

According to him, both agencies agreed to conclude beneficiary verification using the National Social Register and to deploy harmonised digital enrolment platforms. Plans are also underway to conduct refresher training for field registration officers, establish a joint monitoring framework and launch a statewide sensitisation campaign to encourage participation.
