The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has stepped down from office with immediate effect, marking a significant development in the state’s political scene.
In a resignation letter submitted to the Governor, Gwarzo stated that his decision takes effect from 27 March 2026, citing compliance with Section 306 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
His exit comes against the backdrop of rising political pressure, following reports of an impeachment move initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.
Despite the tension surrounding his departure, the former deputy governor insisted that his action was made after “careful consultations and deep reflection,” stressing that it was guided by a desire to safeguard the peace, stability, and overall interest of Kano residents.
Gwarzo added that the step was intended to ensure that government operations proceed without undue disruption, describing his resignation as “an act of responsibility and statesmanship.”
He emphasised that the move was entirely voluntary and “should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing,” but rather a gesture aimed at upholding institutional integrity, democratic principles, and effective governance.
Gwarzo expressed appreciation to the people of Kano State for the opportunity to serve, while also acknowledging the support he received from the Governor, members of the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly, and the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP).
His resignation is expected to set off a series of political consultations as attention now turns to the Governor’s decision on who will assume the position of deputy governor.
